Disaster and a new beginning

I have not updated this page in a while.
There are some reasons for it.

Firstly, there is this thing called energy, or stamina. Given the situation we’re in with my daughter slowly fading away due to a particularly nasty kind of brain tumour, of which there is no known cure or relapse, but also, right before Christmas, my R2-D2, the very thing I build that started this blog, was stolen.

I had my R2 at my temporary work shop for some TLC, and the week before Christmas I was planning to move it to a better location, but in my life, plans can change more often than the weather, and I spent the entire week before Christmas with Emma in the hospital instead.

It was during that period that the workshop was burgled, and my R2 along with a few other things got stolen.

Needless to say, it was a blow, it really did not improve my mood and situation. However, given the situation we were in, we could have had a much worse Christmas. After all, it is only a material item.

Sure, an item I loved and spent 2000+ hours on, but still, just an item.

As if things were not bad enough, Emma broke her leg on New Year’s eve, and it made her pretty much immobile for a while, which sent me spiralling to a place where I started to have panic attacks on where things were going.

So, I had to pick up myself and get back to building. One of the things I’ve been pouring a lot of time and creativity in is this Voight Kampff Machine replica.

It is based on a resin kit from Chaucer44, a great kit, but as always, I always find some things I want to improve on, so I rebuilt the entire arm and eye from scratch to something I think is even more screen accurate, not to mention very light weight and incorporates room for some very specific servos to make it animated.

But, in addition to this, and some small scale models that I’ve been working on, I have started to put my focus back into rebuilding. A new R2-D2.

I loved my old R2, and I know I made a lot of difference taking him to the hospital to meet kids, even more so now that I am spending a lot of time there myself with Emma. I want to be able to bring him to the cancer ward and cheer up the kids laying in there. They really, REALLY need it.

Second: Emma has expressively said several times that she misses R2-D2. If making a new one can bring a smile to her face, that alone is worth going back into a big project like that again.

Third: I have found that building things is my main outlet to cope with this situation. It is oddly therapeutic sitting sanding a thing for two hours without anything else to do. Especially when your mind has tons of things it needs to process.

So, here is where I am at. This is some of the parts I have….

… and this is what I’ve done so far…

I’m looking forward to documenting this second build, in materials I am not used to working, and I hope to really make this as good as I possibly can, with a vast improvement on more panels opening and more versatility!

Stay tuned!

My 3 year old has a brain tumour. #goEmma

Please read this one through. This is important.

I recently wrote a long post about when I took my R2 to visit a little kid with cancer in Uppsala. A brave little trooper that bombarded us with trivia and questions in spite of his illness.

Little did I know disaster would strike my own life precisely 4 weeks later.

On Thursday, June 16th, we took our daughter to the emergency room. She had not been behaving what we thought was normal for a little while, and grew tired of waiting for the referral from our local physician.

On June 21st, our lives came crashing down. Emma, our beloved 3 year old, has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour.

She turned 3 on June 13th, so literally the worst gift any child could receive for their third birthday.

Her tumour is unusually large. She was likely born with it and it has grown slowly over the years. That is the only reason it can be so large and she has not had any symptoms until recently.

Her cancer is inoperable. It is too big, and located so centrally in her brain that it can not be removed through surgical means.
Our only home is chemotherapy which will commence as soon as the results form her biopsy comes in.

Naturally, our lives are wrecked. It is a disaster. We are living in a nightmare.

I don’t know yet what it all entails, it is too early, but we do know that we need to prepare for a LONG fight.

Currently, None of us are working. We are both on sick leave to help Emma as best as we can.

Marta (my fiancée) will not work until Emma is well again. That can mean up to two years.
I might return to work after summer. We don’t know. It all depends on the treatments.

I might need to sell my R2. I don’t know yet. If anyone would be willing to buy him, he looks amazing.

If you have read this build blog in the past and have enjoyed it, you can help us.

Please share this link within your network, and should you have the possibility to help out, it is much appreciated.

Emma is so brave and strong. She is stronger than all of us, I think. She is a little tired after all the tests and the seizures she’s had, but once she is well rested she is so happy. She just doesn’t have the stamina to do much. Yet.

Doing good is sometimes hard

Life… just isn’t fair.
Oh, I don’t talk about luck, or wealth or that some people are born with more than others. I am talking about the things that matters. The only thing that matters.

Yesterday, together with a couple of friends from #501st and #rebellegion, me and #r2d2 visited a Childrens cancer ward in a hospital in Uppsala.

Read that again.

Children.
With cancer.

My good friend (and worldwide award-winning close-up magician) Johan Ståhl had previously visited this hostpital with some magician friends to do something special for the kids. He noted that whatever magic he did, this one kid was not very impressed. He kept talking about Star Wars.

Johan did a trick, this kid looked up at him and asked curiously: “How tall are you?”
He responded, where as the kid almost jumped out of bed informing him that Anakin Skywalker, he was taller than Johan, since Anakin is 188 cm long! Johan realized something had to be done.

I know Johan since many years and we have another mutual friend who is also heavily involved in the Star Wars costuming charity organization: 501st Legion.

A meetup was quickly arranged at the hospital to surprise this little one kid, the one who loved Star Wars more than anything. Yesterday was that day.

A group of us met up, R2 was prepared, the others got into costume, and the door was opened to his room.

From outside the door, R2 bleeted happily and rolled inside. We heard a large gasp from the inside and a small voice who yelled out “R2-D2!”.

Inside we all went, and spent half an hour being heavily bombarded with both questions and facts about Star Wars buy this wonderful little five year old, who was so happy.

There was nothing to reveal his horrible illness, apart from the hoses and machines he was constantly hooked up to and his head where almost all his hair had fallen off.

After giving him a diploma, awarded for extraordinary bravery, we visited the rest of the kids at this cancer ward. Sure. they liked R2, they thought it was fun and interesting, but their combined interest was still nothing on this one kid. The one we were summoned to visit.

So much joy, so much life, so much happiness in this kid, who for a moment almost forgot all about his illness and was allowed to be just a kid. Just a kid who got to meet some of his heroes, and all of us were really smiling, while at the same time crying on the inside.

I hardly remember the drive home from the hospital. It is all like in a dream state, a state I am still in, where my mind cannot comprehend how life can be so unfair. That some kids will not have a childhood where they are allowed to just be kids, but battle very serious issues. Just thinking about the fact that statistically speaking, all those kids we met yesterday will not reach adulthood is unfathomable. Thinking about it is like building a bubble around your head where nothing makes sense. Why? Why these kids?

Why ANY kid?

I hugged my 3 year old daughter extra long when I got home in the evening, and when she was going to bed, she looked at me and asked me if I could tell the story about the fox… an improvised fairy tale I made up on the fly when she had a hard time sleeping a long while ago.

I got into her bedroom, sat down, and told her the story about the fox, and didn’t stop until she was deep asleep. I listened to hear soft breathing for a few seconds before I left her room and thanked my lucky star that it wasn’t her in that ward. I wouldn’t know what to do if it was. My entire reality would just be destroyed. I admire the strength of those parents who are in this situation and have to be strong for the sake of their kids, for the sake of having some sort of life at all.

Can’t we all just agree that kids should be allowed to be kids, and cancer is something extremely vile and nasty, and cancer should be abolished. Especially cancer in kids. It must be particulary horrible for the parents who are going through hell every single day that their children are sick. Living in uncertainty. Hoping. Wishing. Begging.. that their kid will not be part of the statistics. That their kids will get through this. I hope they do. Every single one.

People sometime ask me how I can stand doing these things. I do them because I have to. Not by force, but by something inside that tells me that I have to. I have something (my R2-D2) that kids love, that will magically transport kids from their harsh reality to a magical place in a galaxy far far away where they play that they are beloved characters in a movie.

I can only do so much. I wish I could do more.
I wish I didn’t have to.
