New, Improved Compads!

For the past year or so, I have been helping out my friends in the local Star Wars costuming organisation (Nordic Garrison part of the 501st. In short: A costuming organisation that has movie-quality costumes and raises a LOT of money for charity and all expenses are out of their own pockets) with making Compads for Tie Fighter Pilots and Imperial Crewmen and others.

I’ve now gone into my 4th version of the model, only small, tiny changes, nothing changed in layout, but the changes really makes the quality of the print a LOT better:

It is a bit leaner, and sliced in a slightly better way. It is still lightly curved to sit nicely on the arm. See the comparison picture below:

I also reworked the compad to create another version that is slightly curved the other way, as used by Rebel Pilots and Scanning Crew.

R2 meets Snel Hest

(This is a silly Swedish in-joke, sorry)

Earlier this summer, me and R2 (well, only R2, really, I just tagged along) was invited to iis.se, that is responsible for all Swedish .se top domains and is the Internet foundation in Sweden when they changed name and logo to bring a smile to the faces of the employees.

A quick little visit, but fun and met a lot of fun people.

Background about the title: There is an old image from the net, a meme before meme’s were known as meme’s. Supposedly it dates back to around 2004.

Basically, the caption translated would be something like “I are niec hoarse”.

So, since iis decided to have a lot of things about “vintage meme’s”, they had someone walking around with a horrible horse mask..

The morning ended weirdly when R2 got thrown off a bus..

Evidently the driver was not a Star Wars fan…

Mini update!

My original plan was to do a 40% scale version of my R2.

Well .. This plan has changed. The new plan is to make a 50% scale version of R2-D2.

Why the new format, you may ask? –Well, the slightly larger scale makes the details really pop out from the printer.

I can’t print the entire dome in one go, but I might as well split it in several parts. The first proper dome print was splitting the dome in half, and printing it in halves. It came out really well.

It is quite thin at this point, but once ready, the parts really look good.

It also means I need to print a complete new set of greeblies for the dome, and of course, the old 40% leg struts and parts done, needs to be remade as well.

I just think this is so cute.. 😉

The second dome I made much thicker, and split in 4 parts. The main dome is in thirds, but I also cut off the top to print as one single part as well.

However, still fragile..

Fortunately, this is an easy fix, and once I have acetone coated the insides, it should be sturdy and have no issues at all.
